MCPL’s Food for Fines Returns May 6th to Stock Shelves, Reduce Fees

Excelsior Springs, MO—Mid-Continent Public Library (MCPL) is once again offering its popular “Food for Fines” program. This program allows patrons to clear overdue fines and replacement card charges by donating non-perishable food items.

The program runs from May 6th through May 12th, 2024. During this week, each donated item will be credited towards a patron’s outstanding fees at a value of $1.50, with a maximum reduction of $30. Even those without fines are encouraged to participate, as their donations will be used to “pay it forward” for other patrons.

“Food for Fines is a win-win program,” said Stephen Chalmers, Excelsior Springs Branch Manager. “It allows patrons to clear their accounts while also helping to stock the shelves of local food pantries and charities.”

The program has been a success since its inception, collecting over 195,000 food items to date. MCPL welcomes donations of canned goods, boxed meals, peanut butter, cereal, pasta, and sugar-free/low-sodium/gluten-free options. All donations must be unexpired, undamaged, and in unopened containers.

For more information on the “Food for Fines” program and a complete list of acceptable donation items, please visit the MCPL website at https://www.mymcpl.org/services/food-fines.
