Excelsior Springs, Mo.  –  The Kearney Purple Wave Swim Team dove into a new era Thursday night, hosting their first home meet at the sparkling new outdoor pool at the Excelsior Springs Community Center. The competition against the Woodneath Farms Swim Team marked a significant moment, not just for the team but for the future of aquatic activities in Excelsior Springs.

Previously, the Purple Wave, a summer league team competing in the Northland Conference, practiced at William Jewell College but lacked the facilities to hold meets. The agreement between the team and the community center ensures dedicated practice and meet times that shouldn’t interfere with regular public pool hours.

Hudson Broadbent was eager to participate in his first home meet.

This inaugural event signifies a positive step forward for the Excelsior Springs community. While Woodneath came out on top 614-409, they brought 97 swimmers compared to Purple Wave’s 87. “It was a great first swim meet at the Community Center. Fun times are ahead!” said enthusiastic swim parent Greg Broadbent.

The Purple Wave Swim Team is open to swimmers ages 6-18 and offers “a nurturing environment for young athletes to hone their skills.” The team will host two more home meets on July 2nd and July 16th at the Excelsior Springs Community Center, showcasing the new pool’s potential to become a hub for aquatic competition in the region.

“We’re excited to have Purple Wave at the Community Center, but we may have to see about changing the name of the team,” joked Nate Williams, Parks and Recreation and Community Center Director, referencing the friendly rivalry between Kearney and Excelsior Springs in athletics.
