Excelsior Springs, Mo. (January 12, 2025) — John Pugh Jr., a lively young boy with Down Syndrome, now has a new way to explore the world thanks to Variety KC. Known to his family as “Captain Can’t Sit Still of the SS Make a Break For It” for his endless energy, John Jr. received an adaptive tricycle during a special presentation from the nonprofit held at the Excelsior Springs Community Center.
Ali O’Grady, Community Liaison for Variety KC, and her husband, Jordan O’Grady, who serves as the organization’s Board President, were there to personally deliver the trike to John Jr. and his family. Freedom Concepts built the trike, and the purchase was made possible through a Variety KC mobility grant, which helps families access adaptive equipment not typically covered by insurance.
Ali explained that the nonprofit’s mission is to make Kansas City the most inclusive and accessible city in the world. By providing resources like adaptive bikes, communication devices, and mobility equipment, Variety KC strives to ensure that children with physical and cognitive disabilities can fully participate in community life.
“Our goal is to step in where insurance falls short,” Ali said, highlighting how Variety KC offers grants for equipment that families might otherwise struggle to obtain.
Supporting Children and Families
Variety KC’s impact extends beyond individual families. The organization has led numerous accessibility initiatives, including the installation of Universal Changing Stations throughout Kansas City and the creation of inclusive playgrounds and sports facilities. Ali noted that the nonprofit recently launched an accessible play area at the new Kansas City International Airport and plans to debut a mobile accessible restroom in February. This restroom will travel to parades, community events, and sports gatherings, ensuring families of all abilities can attend comfortably.
Jordan O’Grady emphasized the importance of community partnerships in achieving these goals. Businesses like B&B Theaters not only raise funds but also help amplify Variety KC’s message of inclusion, ensuring the organization’s mission reaches more families in need.
