Mid-Continent Public Library Launches Winter Reading Challenge: “Literary Love”

Embracing the spirit of love in the chilly winter air, the Mid-Continent Public Library (MCPL) is back with its annual Winter Reading Challenge. Running from January 15 to March 15, this year’s theme is “Literary Love,” inviting adults to rekindle their passion for reading within the romance genre. Participants are encouraged to read any five books during this two-month period, and in return, they have a chance to earn a special commemorative coffee mug and qualify for a grand prize.

Amy Fisher, the manager of MCPL’s Reader Services Department, shared the library’s motivation behind the Winter Reading Challenge: “The Winter Reading Challenge is our effort to encourage adults to get back into the practice of leisure reading. It can be hard to find the time to sit down and enjoy a good book when there are so many obligations that we’re all juggling each day, but reading can bring tremendous joy, growth, and satisfaction to our lives, which is why we hope folks will join us as we cozy up with some great reads these next couple of months!”

Just like in previous years, participants who successfully complete the Challenge will not only receive a commemorative mug but will also be entered into a drawing for the grand prize. The grand prize this year is an enticing gift basket and a top-tier membership in MCPL’s Library Lovers program, offering exclusive access to events like author talks and a collection of library-themed merchandise. To be eligible for these rewards, participants must be 18 years or older and sign up online at mymcpl.org/WinterReading or pick up a Winter Reading Challenge program guide booklet at any MCPL branch. All book titles must be logged either online or by hard copy submission before the deadline on March 15.

For those eager to explore the “Literary Love” theme, MCPL staff have thoughtfully curated multiple book lists containing recommendations that include romance novels, true love stories, relationship science and advice books, and much more. However, participants are encouraged to select any five titles that ignite their interest.

Enthusiastic readers can elevate their Challenge experience by attending in-person book groups and events or participating in virtual programs through the Winter Reading Challenge Facebook page. Join the Mid-Continent Public Library in celebrating the love of reading and embark on a literary journey this winter!
