EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. (October 26, 2025) – At 8:59 p.m. Sunday, emergency crews responded to a report of a fire in an upstairs apartment at 104 East Broadway in downtown Excelsior Springs. Upon arrival, firefighters found the apartment and stairwell filled with thick smoke.

The fire, located in an upstairs unit above the Bohemian Sage Art Gallery, was quickly extinguished. However, smoke spread to neighboring apartments and into the businesses below. Crews worked to protect the contents of the art gallery beneath, covering displays with tarps as water poured through the ceiling.

Gallery owner Kat McKown was allowed to briefly walk through the building before firefighters cleared the scene. She said it appeared that most of the water damage was contained to the front of the store, but noted that a full inspection would be needed in the morning to assess the extent of the loss.

Fire departments from Kearney and Liberty responded with mutual aid to assist Excelsior Springs firefighters in controlling the blaze. Ray County Ambulance and Lawson Fire stood by to cover any incoming calls for the city. Fortunately, the fire was brought under control quickly, and there were no reported injuries to residents or pets.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
