Excelsior Springs Fire Chief Urges Caution as Residential Fires Increase Across North America
Excelsior Springs Fire Chief, Joe Maddick, issued a public service announcement (PSA) today, highlighting a growing fire hazard that has led to numerous residential fires and fatalities across the United States and Canada. The alarming trend has been attributed to the practice of discarding cigarettes into potting soil, a seemingly harmless act that can have deadly consequences.
Chief Maddick emphasized that modern potting soil is no longer a simple mixture of dirt, but rather comprises highly flammable materials such as peat moss, shredded wood, bark, styrofoam, and vermiculite. Under specific conditions, these components can insulate a discarded cigarette, causing it to smolder and eventually ignite, leading to potentially devastating fires.
Cities like St. Louis, MO, have witnessed an alarming rise in residential fires resulting from this dangerous practice, resulting in both loss of life and significant financial damages. These incidents have not been isolated, as reports of similar fires have been pouring in from various regions across the United States and Canada.
Chief Maddick urged individuals to refrain from disposing of cigarettes in potted plants and instead encouraged them to utilize designated ashtrays for safe disposal. In addition, he outlined several essential action steps to mitigate the risk of fire:
- Water potted plants regularly: Keeping potting soil adequately hydrated reduces the likelihood of ignition by maintaining moisture levels that deter fires.
- Have a safe place to dispose of cigarettes: Establish designated areas both indoors and outdoors where cigarettes can be safely extinguished, minimizing the risk of accidental ignition.
- Do not allow potting soil to dry out: Regularly monitoring and maintaining soil moisture levels prevents the accumulation of flammable conditions, reducing the risk of fire.
- Use clay pots for plants: In the event of a fire, clay pots are more effective at containing flames than other types of containers, potentially limiting the spread and severity of fires.
In light of the rising number of residential fires caused by discarded cigarettes in potting soil, citizens of Excelsior Springs and individuals across North America need to heed Chief Maddick’s advice and take action to minimize the risk of devastating fires. By implementing these safety measures, residents can contribute to a safer environment for all.
