Excelsior Springs, Mo. (January 15, 2026) — The deteriorated press box at Roosevelt High School is being torn down this week after city officials determined the structure had become a dangerous building and a hazard to surrounding property.
Demolition by T-Mac Construction LLC began on Wednesday, January 14, around 1 p.m., with crews expected to have the site cleaned up by Friday, January 16.
City officials moved forward with the demolition after repeated inspections found the decades-old structure in severe decline, including failing walls, a compromised roof, and overall instability. In recent weeks, part of the press box collapsed extremely close to a neighboring yard, raising concerns about safety, blight, and the risk of further collapse.
A council memo from Community Development Director Mallory Brown described the press box as “actively collapsing” and posing a hazard to the public and surrounding property, noting the building had deteriorated to an advanced state of disrepair.
According to the memo, the property owner acknowledged they were unable to address the issue due to financial constraints and the scope of work required. With the structure continuing to fail, the city proceeded with a dangerous-building abatement process to remove the hazard.
The city initiated a competitive bid process for demolition services. Staff recommended awarding the contract to T-Mac Construction LLC based on references and prior work experience, the memo stated.
The demolition contract was awarded for $18,375, which includes full demolition of the structure, disposal of debris, and restoration of the site to a safe, stable condition.
City officials said the city is covering the cleanup costs up front after taking the project to bid and will place a lien on the property for the amount of the demolition project to recover expenses associated with the abatement.
