Masters and Makers: Wendi Raulie and Cool Lady Quilts

Excelsior Springs, Mo.When Wendi Raulie decided to take a “Beginning Quilting” class twenty-eight years ago, she had no idea it would spark a lifelong passion and eventually lead to the creation of her business, Cool Lady Quilting. Specializing in t-shirt quilts, memory quilts, and custom wall hangings, Wendi’s work goes beyond simple craftsmanship—she transforms cherished memories into meaningful keepsakes.

Wendi’s quilting journey began when her daughter was turning 13, and she wanted to make something special for her. “It was the perfect way to make a personal gift, and I loved it,” Wendi said. What started as a few dozen quilts for family members eventually turned into a business.

“I really enjoy working with t-shirts and memory quilts, as I usually create my own designs,” she shared. In the years since, her quilting has blossomed, especially after she purchased a longarm quilting machine three years ago and computerized it last summer.

Wendi specializes in making memory quilts, which often incorporate t-shirts, clothing, towels, pillowcases, and even neckties. “I think it’s a unique way to preserve memories and keep them for many years to come,” she said. “When I design a quilt you see those shirts every day, instead of keeping them stuffed in a drawer or a box where they are not seen.”

One standout project that Wendi remembers fondly was a quilt made with antique ladies’ handkerchiefs passed down from her customer’s grandparents and mother. “I find myself getting attached to projects. When you know the background, who they belong to, why these items are important, and then I help the memories live on for families.”

Cool Lady Quilting isn’t just about quilts—it’s about preserving memories and creating art from the things that matter most.
