Excelsior Springs, Mo. – Excelsior Springs residents no longer need to travel far for expert urological care. Excelsior Springs Hospital (ESH) continues to expand their services to the community as St. Louis, Mo., native Dr. Patrick Probst extends his care to Excelsior Springs, seeing up to 17 patients a week for Urology Care.
Specializing in helping patients manage urinary conditions, Dr. Probst explained urology entails anything urine touches in the human body. “It can be the kidneys, uterus, bladder, urethra, and prostate issues and kidney stones,” he said. It can also include, “blood in the urine, adrenal, kidney, and bladder cancer, making urology a big field of study with a lot of variety.”
Dr. Probst mentioned he began the study of Urology while studying in Dallas, Texas before attending Missouri University for medical school and receiving his M.D. before beginning his residency in general and urologic surgery at the University of Tennessee in Memphis and completing a robotic surgery fellowship in Los Angeles Calif., at the University of Southern California.
Only in practice for three years, Dr. Probst began his career at the Kansas City Urology Care Center, “the premier urology group in Kansas City,” he said. Now, the group has a “partnership with ESH, so two colleagues and I rotate coming here each Thursday to provide urological care to the community.”
He explained that the care he and his colleagues provide to Excelsior Springs residents entails “state-of-the-art and cutting edge treatments that we provide to everyone else in the metroplex,” without the long commute.
Dr. Probst explained it’s a team effort at ESH as the urology team sees on average, 17 patients each Thursday treating common urologic ailments including:
- Benign prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH)
- Urinary Incompetence
- Urinary retention
- Blood in the urine
- Bladder cancers
He noted that all lab and diagnostic imaging is completed locally, including surgery. “The majority of patient care and diagnoses will all be done at ESH,” he said, “and if Excelsior Springs offers a service here, then we keep our patients here and if there are other things that aren’t offered, we still have access to get someone what they need.”
He emphasized that the ESH is a great access point for receiving high-quality care without leaving the comfort of one’s community. Yet, if more extensive care needs are warranted, instead of having to wait three months to see a urologist, we can help someone get the care they need.
Dr. Probst emphasizes that urological conditions can often be treated in multiple ways, and his priority is ensuring patients feel comfortable with their care. “There might be four different ways to treat a kidney stone and five different ways to manage a large prostate. As a urology group, we have access to all of them,” he said. By offering comprehensive urology care in Excelsior Springs, he aims to make treatment more convenient for patients, allowing them to receive care within their own community.
In addition, Dr. Probst noted that working at ESH has the added benefit of working with great people while getting to know “fantastic members of the community as everyone that I work with has been very professional and efficient at their jobs.”
As for the patients, he said, the people in Excelsior Springs are grateful and make working in Excelsior Springs worthwhile.
