INDEPENDENCE, Mo., Sept. 29, 2025 — The Tiger soccer team remained undefeated in Suburban Blue Conference play with a win over Smithville last week, but fell to Truman in a nonconference matchup.
The Tigers traveled to Independence on Sept. 29 to take on the 10-2 Truman Patriots. The Patriots controlled the pace for much of the night on the way to a 3-0 win over the Tigers. Junior Brett Jones, the Tigers’ goalkeeper, was busy throughout the game, collecting 22 saves on the night, but had three goals get by. The Patriots scored their first goal in the 20th minute to take a 1-0 lead. They added another goal in the 35th minute and finished the scoring in the 75th minute. The Tigers were able to make 14 shot attempts on the Patriots’ goal, but only one of those was on target and was saved by the goalkeeper.
The matchup with the Smithville Warriors took two overtimes for a winner to emerge, with the 2-1 decision going to the Tigers. Freshman Roman Jones was in goal for the Tigers in this matchup and came away with 20 saves, allowing just one goal by the Warriors. The score remained nil-nil until junior Drake Simonitis found the goal off of a throw-in in the 32nd minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Warriors tied it up in the 52nd minute, and that is where the two teams stood through the remainder of regulation and the first overtime. Sophomore Tyler Wartner found senior Brady Schoonover in the 109th minute to score the golden goal in the second overtime to give the Tigers the victory.
The win gave the Tigers a 7-5 overall record and a 3-0 conference record heading into a week with conference matchups against Grandview and Kearney.
