August Curb Appeal Winner: Mary Lou Greim’s Yard, Decades in the Making

Excelsior Springs, Mo.– Thrive Excelsior’s Curb Appeal Award for August went to a familiar face in the community: Mary Lou Greim, who has called her place on Brunke Road home since 1987.

Greim, a retired Good Samaritan director and married to the late Bill Greim, who was a longtime employee of the Excelsior Springs School District, has poured years of care and energy into her yard. In doing so, she has created a place where memories, both new and old, are honored and made.

Mary Lou continues to find joy and purpose in tending her property and surrounding herself with friends and family. She often spends time outside working in the yard or enjoying her patio.

She enjoys shopping for plants or yard ornaments with friends, which she shared may be a little too often. Her green thumb takes her regularly to local spots like Ace Hardware and Family Tree Nursery in Liberty, where she finds the perfect picks to fit into her already beautifully tailored yard.

When asked where she most enjoys spending time, Mary Lou didn’t pick a spot outside at all. Instead, she shared that her favorite place is the view from her kitchen window, where she spends countless moments admiring the yard she’s worked hard in for decades.

As the August Curb Appeal contest winner and the last of summer, Mary Lou received a $25 gift card to Ace Hardware, courtesy of this month’s sponsor, the Excelsior Citizen and awarded by founder Courtney Cole. Thrive Excelsior facilitates the monthly program, which shines a light on the neighbors in Excelsior Springs who go the extra mile to make their homes welcoming and well-kept.

September and October’s awards are right around the corner, and they are always some of the most spirited months for nominations. With crisp weather, colorful leaves, and plenty of seasonal décor, fall front yards tend to get extra creative.

If you know a neighbor whose home deserves recognition, consider nominating them for the next award. Nominations can be made directly through Thrive Excelsior, so follow their Facebook page to see when nominations open up each month!
