Thrive Excelsior Awards “Curb Appeal” Winners

Thrive Excelsior is a collaborative of residents and stakeholders from many sectors including business, tourism, education, healthcare, nonprofit, and local government working in harmony to create a thriving, sustainable community for all generations. As part of this mission, they are committed to increasing the quality of life and life expectancy of Excelsior Springs residents.

One way that they are reaching out to the community is through a new program known as the “Curb Appeal Award.” This award recognizes neighbors who go above and beyond to maintain their homes and properties. Having started in May, Thrive Excelsior’s Housing Committee accepts nominations from neighbors applauding efforts of fellow neighbors in their area that have maintained a nice property. In an effort to spread the love equally, the committee solicits nominations from specific neighborhoods that are then on a rotation each month, assuring neighbors in each area of town are recognized.

In May the committee recognized Shane and Carlie Kempton who live on Wornall. Some advice they gave for other homeowners who want to take on some home improvement projects is, “Don’t get discouraged by obstacles. Help your neighbors and be passionate about everything you do. Our secrets to happiness [are] at our home.”

City of Excelsior Springs’ Neighborhood Specialist Laura Mize explained why the program is important by saying, “When a neighbor puts effort into making their property look nice, it makes the whole street look better! This contest is a great way to thank those who improve the environment in our neighborhoods by beautifying their properties!”

As an added incentive, Thrive Excelsior finds local sponsors to offer a $25 gift certificate to a local business to offer. The program’s first sponsor was Kenny Manley with Re/Max Properties. June’s sponsor is Bill Griffey with Griffey Insurance Agency.

In June, Kimberly and Joel Glaspy were awarded a Curb Appeal award after being nominated by a neighbor who said that it was nice driving past their house each day on the way to work. The nominator didn’t even know their names and had to drive past to get the house number for the nomination. The Glaspy’s bought the property eight years ago and have invested a lot into the yard with landscaping and a large garden. Bill Griffey was there to provide the Glaspy’s with a gift card to Westlake Ace Hardware, where they said they could easily spend it.

Nominations from neighbors in the Kibler Park and surrounding area are currently being sought. If you live within the green box on the map below, nominate one of your neighbors today! Click here to make a nomination! This month’s Curb Appeal Contest is sponsored by Mayor Pro-Tem Sonya Morgan.

Thrive Excelsior’s efforts center around three key areas: health and wellness, housing, and economic vitality. All of this with the idea that together residents and leaders from across the community have a role to play in fostering a thriving communities.
