Excelsior Springs, Mo. — At approximately 7 p.m. Saturday, June 29, the Excelsior Springs Police Department descended upon a home at 321 West Broadway to serve a felony warrant on Sean-Paul Maupins, who is wanted for first-degree assault.

Upon entering the residence, Maupins barricaded himself in an interior room. Several other individuals were present in the home, complicating the situation. Tensions heightened when Maupins set off a firework inside the house.

Uncertain if the sound was a gunshot, officers erred on the side of caution, donning bulletproof vests and drawing their weapons to secure the scene. Moments later, Clay County Sheriff’s deputies, including canine units, arrived to assist. Realizing he was outnumbered, Maupins surrendered relatively peacefully.

Several individuals were detained briefly but later released. Maupins was transported to the Excelsior Springs jail and will be moved to the county detention center.

Neighbors who gathered across the street from the scene expressed their relief at the action being taken. They said the residence has become a local nuisance and a known spot for drug offenders and other criminals to gather.

In a Friday morning city council work session, the property was discussed as a growing concern for the neighborhood. The owners recently vacated the residence and are reportedly attempting to sell it. It was said that realtors who entered the home found several people in it and saw evidence of drug use before quickly leaving.
