Timothy Haslett, who was indicted by a Clay County grand jury last month on nine counts on charges of kidnapping and raping a Kansas City woman for over a month while holding her captive in his basement, will have his case sent back to a new grand jury due to a technical issue.
The Clay County Prosecutor’s Office announced in a press release that they had discovered a technical and procedural issue with the Grand Jury that was impaneled from November 2022 until March 2023. This issue has prompted the office to send back the case of Timothy Haslett and several others to a new grand jury.
Although the issue is not believed to present any prejudice or violation of the defendants’ constitutional rights, the office has opted to take proactive steps to cure all indictments issued during that period, including Haslett’s case.
Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson clarified that no new charges will be filed, and there will be no changes made to Haslett’s custody status or bond amount. However, Haslett’s case number and potentially the division in which his case is being heard may change.
Thompson emphasized that the technical error was an honest mistake outside the control of the Court or the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. He further added that due to the legal confidentiality of Grand Jury proceedings, the office is not able to disclose any further details beyond what is provided in the press release. However, the office has expressed its desire to be as transparent and open as legally possible about the situation.
Haslett’s case will now be reviewed by a new grand jury, as part of the measures taken by the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office to address the technical issue. We will continue to provide updates as they become available.
