Monday, July 18, 2022 – At 9:02 AM Clay County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Mo. Highway 33 and NE 130th St., to assist Kearney Police at the site of an attempted trailer theft gone awry. A spokesperson for the Clay County Sheriff’s Department said that a farmer interrupted two men trying to steal a trailer from his property. The men abandoned the trailer and fled in their truck from the scene, “driving through fields and fences” to escape. As deputies were investigating the crime scene a civilian reported seeing the suspect’s truck enter a field and park along a tree line on Summersette Road, just north of U.S. 69 Highway, near Mosby, MO. Deputies located the truck parked in the woods, with no one inside, but they did locate a gun that had been reported stolen from another incident. Law enforcement utilized K-9 units to track the suspects until it became unsafe for the dogs to continue in the heat. The suspects remain at large, but deputies have identified at least one of the men. We will update this story as more details become available.
