Excelsior Springs, Mo. (Dec. 13, 2024) – A stolen truck pursuit spanning two counties ended in Excelsior Springs Tuesday afternoon after deputies from the Clay County Sheriff’s Department and Excelsior Springs police officers deployed spike strips to stop the vehicle.
Authorities have identified the driver involved in the pursuit as Jimmie L. Chapman, 48, of Kansas City, MO. Chapman has been charged with two felonies: aggravated fleeing a stop and tampering with a motor vehicle. He is currently being held on a $75,000 bond.
The incident began around 1:50 p.m. when Clay County deputies spotted a stolen truck near NE 69 Highway and Heartland Drive in Liberty. When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver fled north on 69 Highway.
During the pursuit, Clay County deputies, along with Excelsior Springs Police officers, deployed spike strips several times, puncturing all of the truck’s tires. Despite the significant tire damage, the suspect continued driving. At one point, the fleeing vehicle maneuvered through a field near Vintage Drive before getting back onto 10 Highway, traveling through downtown Excelsior Springs, and eventually crossing into Ray County.
By the time the vehicle reached O Highway and Perry Road, most of the truck’s wheels were reduced to axles. At approximately 2:09 p.m., the pursuit concluded when the Chapman stopped and reversed into a patrol vehicle. Deputies then apprehended both the driver and a passenger.
The passenger was released later, while Chapman was taken into custody. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
A tow truck removed the stolen vehicle, and deputies notified the owner of its recovery.
