Excelsior Springs, Mo. (Nov. 16, 2024) – The Excelsior Springs High School Performing Arts Department dazzled audiences with its recent production of the hit musical Mamma Mia! Performed over two weekends, the production brought a blend of energy, talent, and ABBA’s timeless music to life, leaving attendees raving about the performances.
Set on a picturesque Greek island, Mamma Mia! is the story of Sophie Sheridan, a young bride-to-be who dreams of having her father walk her down the aisle. The twist? Sophie doesn’t know who her father is. After secretly reading her mother Donna’s diary, she discovers three possible candidates—Sam, Harry, and Bill—and invites all three to her wedding, hoping to uncover the truth. The story unfolds with humor, heart, and a soundtrack of ABBA’s greatest hits as Sophie, Donna, and their friends navigate love, identity, and family connections.
Directed by Jeff Haney, with musical direction by Tim Harlan and Dustin Griffin and choreography by 2024 ESHS alum Lydia McLean, the show was a true collaborative effort of over 150 students and staff. The production was the culmination of months of hard work, from acting and singing to set design, lighting, and costuming. Haney, who has directed over 100 productions during his twelve-year tenure, praised the cast and crew, stating, “This cast has been a pleasure, and their growth over the past two months of rehearsal was impressive.”
Audiences were equally impressed. Community member Cress Hewitt shared on Facebook, “We went last weekend, and it was amazing. It’s a definite must-see.” Judy Wormsley added, “Excellent job by all cast and crew! Very enjoyable evening! Congrats to all involved!” Lee Ann Eldridge echoed these sentiments, saying, “I really enjoyed this show! The performances were great, and the stage design was awesome! Everyone involved should be proud!”
The production featured standout performances by students such as Kate Houck, who brought energy and emotion to the role of Sophie Sheridan, and Audrey Ishmael, whose portrayal of Donna Sheridan captivated audiences with her powerful vocals and heartfelt moments. Mac Morris, Carter Borchert, and Wesley Johnson rounded out the trio of Sophie’s potential fathers, delivering both humor and charm in their roles as Sam, Harry, and Bill, respectively. Supporting cast members, including Ryder Kern and Florian Smith as Sky as Donna’s lively best friends, Tanya and Rosie, added humor and depth to the show.
Behind the scenes, the production’s success relied on the dedication of its talented crew. Katelin Mansell served as Stage Manager, ensuring the show ran smoothly from start to finish, while Natalee Hardesty’s lighting design helped bring the vibrant Greek island setting to life. Costume and set designs enhanced the colorful, upbeat vibe of the production.
The Excelsior Springs Performing Arts Department once again delivered a memorable production, sharing the incredible talent of its students and staff.
