Excelsior Springs, Mo. (January 5, 2025) – As Excelsior Springs plunges into winter weather, Laura Mize, Neighborhood Specialist for the city of Excelsior Springs, wants to remind citizens that volunteers in the community are here to help shovel snow for those in need through a neighborly initiative called Snow Angels.
“Snow Angles are truly the coolest volunteers in town,” said Mize.
She noted that the program began years ago under the name Snow Buddies and has since evolved into the Snow Angels initiative, a neighbor-helping-neighbor effort. The program consists of a team of dedicated volunteers who shovel driveways and walkways for individuals unable to do so themselves free of charge. Mize emphasized that “volunteers cannot accept payment for their services.”
Volunteers in the Snow Angels program are matched with neighbors in need nearby and are directed when they can begin clearing snow. Typically, Mize explained, volunteers are advised to wait until it is safe to go out after snowfall. Once directed, they report to their assigned neighbor to start clearing sidewalks or driveways.
Students needing community service hours are also encouraged to participate in the Snow Angels initiative, as their volunteer time can fulfill community service requirements.
“This is something I would like to see grow into a team of volunteers that kicks off each winter with a fun event and celebrates with a party at the end of the season,” Mize said. She added that the program is “simple, but I hope very helpful.”
