Multiple parents and students reached out to the Excelsior Citizen this evening reporting a lockdown at the high school. Some individuals claimed shots had been fired. ESPD reports NO SHOTS WERE FIRED.
At 9:31 PM 02/10/22 Deputy superintendent Jaret Tomlinson just sent out this email to parents of Excelsior Springs students.
The high school basketball game tonight ended and then a hold in place occurred to lock down the building. An individual was near the high school making threats to harm theirself and others. The Excelsior Springs Police were onsite and the situation is being handled by them. There were no injuries or issues inside the gym where the basketball game took place. But anytime situations like this take place, it is important to protect everyone as best as possible.
As of 9:36 PM the Hold in place is still in effect for those at the school. Will will provide updates as they become available.
9:48 PM ESPD reports an outside agency called to have ESPD go to check on an individual who was suicidal, possibly homicidal, he was said to be at his father’s home near the high school. When officers arrived and attempted contact he fled from the home and was headed towards the high school which is what initiated the lockdown. No shots have been fired. Officers did not see anything in the individual’s hands as he ran but they are proceeding as though the individual is armed. Multiple agencies were assisting in the search, Clay County Sheriff, Kearney K-9 Unit, Ray County Sheriff, and Highway Patrol.
10:00 PM High School was evacuated, 22 staff remain in the building.
10:02 PM Individual in custody and search terminated.
