Pictures of official forms of identification, passport, drivers license, social security card

By 2025, Missouri will make a change to require “Real ID” from its citizens to access federal facilities, nuclear power plants, and most notably, boarding domestic flights within the United States. To obtain a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, applicants must provide documents that verify their identity, lawful status, Social Security number, and residency. The Missouri Department of Revenue has issued what documents you must bring with you to obtain your real ID. In order to make the already rough trip to the DMV smoother, the documents are as follows:

1. Identity Verification

You need to present one of the following primary documents that show your full name and date of birth:

  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport
  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport card
  • Certified U.S. Birth Certificate (issued by a city, county, or state; must include full name, date of birth, and parents’ full names)
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card
  • Valid Foreign Passport with a valid, unexpired U.S. visa accompanied by an I-94
  • Valid, unexpired Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
  • Valid, unexpired Out of State Real ID driver’s license, permit, or identification card
  • Valid, unexpired Missouri Real ID driver’s license, permit, or identification card

2. Lawful Status

You must provide one of the same primary documents listed under Identity Verification to verify your lawful status in the United States.

3. Social Security Number

You need a document that shows your name and full Social Security Number (SSN). Acceptable documents include:

  • Social Security Card (must be signed)
  • W-2 Form
  • SSA-1099 Form
  • Non-SSA-1099 Form
  • Pay Stub with your name and SSN

4. Proof of Missouri Residency

Two documents are required from different categories that show your name and current residential address in Missouri. Examples include:

  • Utility Bill (phone, water, gas, electric, etc.)
  • Voter Registration Card
  • Bank Statement
  • Government Check or Pay Check
  • Property Tax Receipt
  • Mortgage, Housing, or Leasing Document
  • Homeowner’s or Auto Insurance Policy
  • Driver License Renewal Postcard
  • Education Transcript (for current school year from a Missouri educational institution)
  • Professional License (only if it includes your home address)

5. Name Change Documents (if applicable)

If your current name differs from the name on your primary identity document, you’ll need to provide certified documents verifying the name change. Examples include:

  • Certified Marriage License
  • Certified Divorce Decree
  • Certified Adoption Papers
  • Amended Birth Certificate
  • Other Certified Court Order

Additional Notes:

  • Applicants under 21 years old may have additional options for proof of residency, such as school records or medical documents.
  • All documents must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies are generally not accepted unless certified by the issuing agency.
  • Documents must be in English or accompanied by a certified English translation.

Any questions about if your document will be able to be used are directed towards the MO Department of Revenue, who can be reached at  573-526-2407. Real ID will be required for all citizens to board domestic flights starting on May 7th, 2025.
