On the morning of October 4, 2023, at approximately 6:50 AM, the Excelsior Springs Police Department responded to a reported single-vehicle-to-pedestrian accident at the intersection of US 69 HWY Southbound and N Jesse James Rd. The incident involved a Ford Freestyle Minivan driven by a 79-year-old resident of Polo, MO, and a 61-year-old pedestrian from Lawson, MO.

Upon their arrival at the scene, law enforcement officers quickly identified the parties involved. The pedestrian, a 61-year-old woman, was unable to provide a statement detailing the events leading up to the accident at that time.

According to the official police report, the driver of the Ford Freestyle Minivan informed authorities that she had been traveling southbound on US 69 HWY near the Excelsior Springs Hospital. Due to the early morning darkness, she claimed she did not see any pedestrians walking alongside the road. As she neared the intersection, she suddenly noticed a dark shadow on the front passenger side of the A-pillar of her vehicle and then felt “some type of contact with the vehicle.” The driver emphasized that she was not distracted by any external factors and had been attentively focused on the roadway as she drove.

The collision resulted in minor damage to the front passenger side of the driver’s vehicle. After collecting the necessary information and statements, the driver was released, along with her vehicle. The injured pedestrian was promptly transported by EMS to a nearby hospital for further medical evaluation and treatment.

The Excelsior Springs Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the incident to determine the precise circumstances and causes of the accident. Further updates may be provided as more information becomes available.
