Slip on your speedos and strap on your goggles, the Excelsior Springs Community Center is set to commence phase 2 of construction this July. Phase 2 of the Community Center will include the addition of an indoor/outdoor eight-lane, 25-yard, competition-level swimming pool. The new pool will be equipped with a removable dome structure allowing access for year-round use. Parks, Recreation, and Community Center Director Nate Williams said that the facility will be very similar to the pool at Clayview Racquet Sports, Swim, and Social Club (see image). The pool is planned to be 13 feet deep on the “deep end” and 4 feet deep on the “shallow end,” with one diving board initially installed and footings in place for a second. There are also plans to add an aquatic climbing wall, and Williams says they are looking into the possibility of getting a removable aquatic obstacle course that could be used occasionally for special events.

An exciting aspect of this addition is that the competition-level pool will allow Excelsior Springs School District the ability to offer competitive swimming as a school sport for the first time ever! Excelsior Springs School District Athletic Director, Joe Greim has already been in contact with the Missouri State High School Athletic Association (MSHSAA) to begin the steps necessary to have a team for the 2023-2024 school year. This is especially convenient as Excelsior Springs transitions back to the Suburban Conference for sporting events where all of the existing schools already have competitive swim teams. Excelsior Springs will join the Suburban Blue Conference along with, Grandview, Kearney, Raytown South, Ruskin, Smithville, and Winnetonka.

The outdoor pool will also have a partially shaded splash pad for toddlers, allowing parents the ability to be outdoors with older children while keeping younger children entertained. Additional parking (not pictured) will be added to the west of the new pool which will increase the overall parking capacity for the Community Center. Williams said there are also plans for a seasonal “concession trailer” that will serve traditional poolside snacks. Williams said construction crews have set a timeline for the completion of Phase 2 by Memorial Day Weekend of 2023, but he said he would be surprised if construction was complete by then, citing the current supply chain issues. He says he is expecting completion of the project “sometime in 2023.”

** In an earlier version of this story we mistakenly said the pool would be 25-meters when in fact it will be 25-yards which is the appropriate length for competitive swimming at the high school and collegiate levels in the United States.
