Excelsior Springs, Mo. — Community members still have time to recognize a graduating senior who exemplifies kindness and compassion by nominating them for the annual Jason Simmons Memorial Award. Nominations must be postmarked by Wednesday, April 24.
The award was established in memory of Jason David Simmons, a beloved member of the Excelsior Springs High School Class of 1994 who died in a car accident in 1998. Created by Jason’s parents, Kim and Dave Simmons, the award honors students who make a positive difference in the lives of others through quiet acts of compassion, volunteerism, and service to the community.
“This award isn’t about academics or athletics,” the Simmons family wrote. “It’s about recognizing a student whose character stands out because of their kind heart and willingness to help others.”
Nominees must be graduating seniors at Excelsior Springs High School who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to service, whether it’s helping classmates, assisting the elderly, supporting the disadvantaged, or contributing to school and civic projects with a spirit of cooperation and care.
Anyone—students, teachers, parents, neighbors, or community members—can submit a nomination. Nominators are asked to include a letter detailing why the student deserves the recognition, along with the official nomination form.
A selection panel from the high school will review the submissions and narrow the field to five finalists. From there, ESHS staff will vote to determine the recipient.
