The Excelsior Springs High School and the Kim and Dave Simmons family are seeking nominations for the Jason Simmons Memorial Award. The award was established to honor the memory of Jason David Simmons, ESHS Class of ’94, who died in an automobile accident in April of ’98. The Jason Simmons Memorial Award celebrates graduating seniors who exemplify the superior leadership characteristics of a cheerful giver and who make Excelsior Springs a better place to live through their service of compassionate caring for others in our community.
The award is given annually to a graduating senior from Excelsior Springs High School who demonstrates the attributes of a charitable and compassionate citizen. Examples of these attributes include lending a hand to other students, helping others in the community such as the elderly or disadvantaged, offering services to school and community projects with an attitude of eager cooperation, and any other continual acts of kindness which exemplify the nominee’s charitable character. Recipients of the award have a $250 contribution made to the charity of their choice.
The nomination process for the award is open to anyone, and nominations must be postmarked by April 24th. Once nominations have been received, Excelsior Springs High School will select a panel of judges who will narrow the nominations down to no more than five. Selection will then be made by a majority vote of the high school staff.
Jason Simmons had a charitable heart, and his parents, Kim and Dave Simmons say they remember and cherish that quality of his character more than any athletic award or academic achievement he earned. The Simmons family offers this award with a spirit of appreciation for the charitable attributes of students in the Excelsior Springs community.
In a letter attached to the nomination form Kim and Dave wrote, “We feel there are certain students in our district… who are truly admired by others because of that ‘indefinable attribute.’ It would be that student’s compassionate character that would make them stand out above the rest – regardless of any musical ability, athletic prowess, academic achievements, etc.”
The type of individuals the Simmons family would like honored in their son’s memory would exemplify the following characteristics, values, and ethics:
- A willingness to contribute and share talents and strengths with others.
- An eagerness to cooperate with others and work toward a common goal.
- An acceptance of others regardless of status or class.
- A kind and encouraging attitude in daily living.
The community is encouraged to participate in this award process and to help honor a deserving senior in Jason’s memory. The Simmons family would be honored for a senior to receive the award and to continue to recognize the brotherly love and charity that they saw in their son.
