Municipal Candidates Greet the Public

On Saturday, February 18, 2023 the Excelsior Citizen and Excelsior Springs Business Women of Missouri hosted a Meet the Candidates event at Excelsior Roasting Company. There are contested races in both the city council and school board. Also in attendance were representatives from the school district to answer questions regarding Proposition Lewis and the City Manager Molly McGovern was there to discuss the 3% recreational marijuana tax. State Representative Doug Richey, School Board President Tray Harkins, City Councilman Mark Spohn, Mayor Pro Tem Stephen Spear, and City Councilwoman Sonya Morgan were also in attendance. Thanks to the Excelsior Roasting Company for hosting and the Clay County Election Board representatives who were on hand to register citizens to vote.

Proposition L

The Excelsior Springs School District has a measure on the ballot to reallocate funds that are already being collected to make available for construction of a replacement school for Lewis Elementary. This is the last step in the district-wide improvements that have taken place over the last couple of years.

3% Tax on Recreational Marijuana

The City of Excelsior Springs will have a proposed 3% tax on recreational marijuana now being sold statewide. The state gave the municipalities the option to put the 3% tax on the ballot. While many are allocating theirs to the general fund, the City of Excelsior Springs has designated the funds to be spent on prevention and emergency services. Click here for more information.
