Mental Health Month + Local Resources

The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The conversation around mental health is an important one and we wanted to take this time to talk about some of the resources available here in Excelsior. 

The Excelsior Springs Hospital offers a variety of resources in their Psychiatric department. Employing care coordinators, counselors, therapists, a psychiatrist and various other positions, they have a full team ready and willing to help those who need it. Because the demand for care is great, seeking assistance for your needs will better assure care in a timely manner. The outpatient services have hours Monday through Friday (extended as needed) by providers. Their services are available for all ages, all psychiatric diagnoses, with internal or external referrals. Beacon Mental Health is another option for residents. Located at 1087 N Italian Way they are by referral/appointment only. Their list of services is vast including psychiatric services, support groups and rehabilitation among others. Their office hours for making an appointment are Monday through Friday 8:30am-5:00pm. Another amazing resource is Psychology Today’s website. On their website you can do a search for a therapist near you. Not only that, but you can see a picture of the therapist, all their credentials, what kind of therapy they specialize in and more. You can also filter your search to your specific needs by choosing things like the gender of therapist you want, insurance you have, age, faith, race, sexuality, language, and more. The website also tells you if your therapist offers virtual sessions or not. 

You can find additional resources on the Good Samaritan Center’s website. Students at the high school can find help through the counseling department.  Whatever you are looking for, help is out there and there is no shame in taking advantage of it!
