Medical Emergency Leads to Fatal Collision in Excelsior Springs

Excelsior Springs, MO — A 52-year-old Excelsior Springs man has died following a head-on collision that responders believed was caused by a medical emergency.

Brett K. Nelson was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe northbound on Dunbar Avenue when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a southbound 2022 Ford F150 driven by 67-year-old Lloyd R. Baxter, also of Excelsior Springs. The devastating crash occurred on July 22 at approximately 11:56 a.m. in a quiet neighborhood where the speed limit is only 25 miles per hour.

Nelson was transported to Liberty Hospital by Excelsior Springs Fire Department. He passed away approximately 18 hours later, on July 23 at 8:00 p.m., due to complications of his medical condition that were compounded by the crash. Baxter, who was wearing a safety device and had airbags in his vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was transported to the same hospital by private vehicle for evaluation.
