The Beef-Mac casserole was on point as senior citizens celebrated the return of the Senior Lunch program today at the Excelsior Springs Community Center. The lunch program had been put on hold for more than a year leaving many seniors without food security and longing for fellowship with their friends. Jeff Barge, director of the Senior Center, said it was great to see so many people return today as they reinstated the daily meal. Participants in the program were also glad to be back together with their friends. John Baker said, “I ate out a lot. You should see my car, it’s a mess! But really, I missed the interaction more than I missed the meals.” Anita Deckard seconded that opinion, “You just grow when you’re with other people,” she said. Some of the seniors said they were concerned about the rise of the new Delta variant of COVID-19 jeopardizing their gatherings, but overall they felt relatively safe knowing that a majority of their friends had been vaccinated.
The Excelsior Springs Senior Center serves lunch at 11:30 am every weekday (Monday-Friday). The suggested donation is $2 per senior meal (60+) and $5.75 for non-senior guests. Due to social distancing, there is limited capacity.
