MCPL Announces Winter Programs for Excelsior Springs Branch

The Mid-Continent Public Library (MCPL) has unveiled an engaging lineup of programs scheduled for December 2024 through February 2025 at the Excelsior Springs Branch. With activities designed for all age groups, the library continues its mission to serve as a hub for learning, creativity, and community engagement. Below are highlights of the upcoming offerings:

Programs for Adults

Adult Game Night 
Tuesday, January 28 at 6:30 p.m. 

Enjoy board games and meeting new people? Join us for a fun evening of gameplay and conversation! Come alone or bring a friend! For adults.

Adult Tabletop Role-Playing Games 
Saturday, December 14 at 2:00 p.m. 

Enjoy tabletop role-playing games and meeting new people? Join us for a fun time of gameplay and conversation! Come alone or bring a friend. Registration is required. For adults.

Book Group 
Tuesday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m. 
Tuesday, February 25 at 2:00 p.m.

Introduction to Crochet 
Thursday, January 30 at 6:30 p.m. 
Thursday, February 6 at 6:30 p.m. 

Learn the basics of crochet during this two-session class, and create a unique mug rug that uses beginning stitches and techniques. Supplies needed: One skein yarn (weight number 4) and a crochet hook (size G or H). Registration is required. For adults.

Rock Revolution of the ’70s 
Wednesday, February 26 at 6:30 p.m.

Acts such as Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Fleetwood Mac contributed to a diverse music scene in the 1970s. From rock to pop, soul, progressive rock and straight-out dance music, ’70s artists propelled multiple genres to new heights. Join musician Kent Rausch for an exploration of this rock revolution. For adults.

Tech Talk 
Tuesday, January 21 at 3:00 p.m. 
Wednesday, February 12 at 2:00 p.m.

Whether you are a first-time computer user or have had lots of experience, there are always questions waiting to be asked about technology. Bring your questions to the branch, or just come to listen and learn from other participants. You can bring your own laptop computer or tablet. Registration is required. For adults.

The Villisca Axe Murders of 1912: Unsolved and Haunted 
Tuesday, February 18 at 6:30 p.m.

Join paranormal investigator Becky Ray for the story of one of the most notorious unsolved murders in Midwestern history and the ghosts who remain in the house. For adults.

Christmas Storytime 
Tuesday, December 17 at 10:30 a.m.

Celebrate the spirit of Christmas at this special storytime. Geared for ages 0-5. (All ages) 

Kids Create Art 
Thursday, January 9 at 4:00 p.m. 

Craft and create at the Library. We provide the supplies; you supply the imagination! Please register participating children only. (Ages 6 and up) Registration is required. 

Kids Create Art: Holidays Around the World 
Thursday, December 12 at 4:00 p.m.

Celebrate the season with holiday-inspired crafts. Create a variety of themed craft items for yourself and the special people in your life. Please register participating children only. (Ages 6 and up) Registration is required.

Kids Create Art: Love to Craft 
Thursday, February 13 at 4:00 p.m. 

Celebrate the season with love-inspired crafts. Create a variety of themed craft items for yourself and the special people in your life. Please register participating children only. (Ages 6 and up) Registration is required. 

Play and Learn 
Friday, December 6 at 10:30 a.m.

Enjoy a special preschool playtime that is designed to stimulate young minds and strengthen early literacy skills. There will be exhilarating and fun activities and the opportunity to meet other preschoolers and caregivers. The open playtime allows you to come and go as your schedule permits. (All ages) 

Read to a Pet 
Wednesday, January 15 at 6:00 p.m. 

Read to some very good listeners—registered therapy pets. These special animals will be available for 10-minute sessions to help children improve their reading skills and build self-confidence. Register participating children only. Space is limited. Check with your local branch for more information. (Ages 5 and up) Registration is required. 

StoneLion Puppets Presents: Take Flight 
Saturday, February 8 at 11:00 a.m. 

Explore our solar system and beyond with astronauts, aliens, asteroids, and a talking moon all from StoneLion Puppet Theatre. (All ages) Registration is required. 

Storytime for Families 
Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. 

Hear stories, sing songs, join in movement activities, and create memories together. Designed for children of all ages, come share the early literacy experience with the whole family. (All ages) 

Storytime for Toddlers 
Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. 

Share a fun, interactive journey with your toddler that will engage and encourage next steps into early reading. Designed for toddlers 18-36 months old and caregivers. (Ages 18 months and up) 

Storytime with Santa
Monday, December 9 at 6:30 p.m. 

Santa is making a special trip to the Library to read a story and spread holiday cheer. After the story, children are welcome to visit with Santa to tell him what they want for Christmas. (All ages) 

Teen Programs

En Garde, Bard! Stage Combat
Saturday, January 25 at 2:30 p.m. 

Learn the art of stage combat from the masters at The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. Take up a wooden sword, and join this interactive lesson using scenes from Shakespeare’s plays. Registration is required. For teens.

Teen Games: Role-Playing Games 
Monday, December 2 at 6:30 p.m. 
Monday, January 6 at 6:30 p.m. 
Monday, February 3 at 6:30 p.m. 

Play tabletop role-playing games at the Library! From D&D to Fate, Starfinder to Lasers and Feelings, join us for a campaign-style gaming experience. Talk to your branch for more information about which system will be played. Character sheets and dice will be provided. Registration is required. For teens.
