EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. — The Excelsior Springs Community Center will launch a U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) program starting Monday, October 7. USMS is a national organization that supports adult swimming for individuals 18 and older, whether for fitness, competition, or both.

The new Masters group will offer swim workouts tailored to all ability levels, from beginners to advanced swimmers. Participants can join for fitness purposes or to compete in USMS-sanctioned swim meets, open water competitions, and triathlons. The only requirement is that participants be at least 18 years old.

Practices will be held in the 25-yard competition pool at the Excelsior Springs Community Center, with on-deck coaching provided by Stephen Chalmers and Steven Murphy. Chalmers will lead Monday and Thursday morning practices from 6:00 to 7:00 a.m., while Murphy will coach Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Both coaches have experience in the Kansas City Masters swimming community, having been part of the Gladstone Masters group, which is affiliated with Missouri Valley Masters Swimming (MOVY).

Excelsior Springs City Manager Molly McGovern, herself a Masters swimmer, expressed enthusiasm for the new program. “I’ve participated in the Masters program at the Gladstone Community Center, and it’s a great way to achieve fitness for all skill levels,” McGovern said. “I hope there will be a lot of interest in starting this program here in Excelsior Springs. There’s enough instruction to improve all of your strokes, and it’s a lot of fun.”

Registration for the Excelsior Springs Masters Swimming program is now open, and membership at the community center is not required. For more information or to register, interested individuals can contact the community center’s aquatics staff or visit their website at https://www.es-prcc.com/us-masters-swimming.
