Excelsior Springs, Mo. – Excelsior Springs Hospital (ESH) is expanding its reach in cardiovascular care with the addition of Dr. Calvin G. Madrigal to its Outpatient Specialty Services. A practicing cardiologist, Dr. Madrigal brings his expertise and heart for healing to the local community.
Cardiology is the study of the heart and its functions, as well as diseases affecting the heart, arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels. Dr. Madrigal provides both inpatient and outpatient care, which allows him to develop long-term relationships with the patients he serves.
“I enjoy continuity of care,” he said. “It gives me the chance to follow patients over several years, building relationships with them and their families.”
Dr. Madrigal earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center before moving to Phoenix, Arizona, where he completed his internship and fellowship at Banner University Medical Center. A Kansas City native, he later returned home to complete his residency at KU Medical Center, eventually establishing his practice at both Liberty Hospital and ESH.
Currently, he continues to see patients at Liberty Hospital but says he appreciates the time he spends offering outpatient services at ESH.
“I like the people here and the community feel,” he said. “Every time you walk in, people say hello—and you can sense their pride.”
At ESH, Dr. Madrigal provides a range of cardiology services, including:
Non-invasive cardiac evaluations
Treadmill stress tests
Echocardiograms
Preventative cardiovascular screenings
He also manages conditions such as heart failure, coronary heart disease, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
For patients who need more advanced testing or procedures—such as nuclear stress tests or cardiac catheterizations—Dr. Madrigal coordinates referrals to Liberty Hospital.
“We aim to provide initial, comprehensive cardiac care locally, catching potential issues early and guiding patients to the appropriate next steps,” he said. “Our goal at ESH is to offer accessible, preventative cardiovascular care right in the community’s backyard.”
He also emphasized the importance of rural healthcare, noting that many people in smaller communities may not prioritize preventive care. Outreach clinics like ESH’s outpatient services can help detect potential heart problems early—before they become critical—while also reducing the need to travel long distances for care.
Dr. Madrigal is especially passionate about educating patients on the importance of heart health and prevention. He works with them to manage risk factors such as high blood pressure and tobacco use and encourages a proactive approach to avoiding heart attacks and other complications.
“Communication is crucial because medical issues can be overwhelming,” he said. “My style is about listening first and then guiding patients toward better health. I aim to make patients feel heard and understood—not just treated.”
This patient-first approach, he said, helps people feel more comfortable and engaged in their own care—an essential factor in cardiology, where lifestyle changes often play a key role.
Dr. Madrigal visits ESH once a month and typically sees up to 16 patients per visit. While most patients are referred by their primary care provider, self-referrals are also welcome.
