EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. (Sept. 6, 2024) – Three Excelsior Springs dads recently joined forces to create and donate “Buddy Benches” to the local elementary schools, including Lewis, Cornerstone, and Elkhorn, as well as the Early Childhood Center. The benches are designed to promote kindness, inclusivity, and friendship among students, supporting the district’s ongoing efforts to build a welcoming environment for all.

Chase Schutte, Jessica Broadbent, Mark Bullimore, Josh Campbell, and Zac Wilkins were excited to present the benches to students last week.

The project, led by Chase Schutte, Zac Wilkins, and Josh Campbell, began with a simple desire to give back to their community. In September 2023, Wilkins approached Schutte with the idea of creating unique, attractive benches for the schools. After weeks of research and brainstorming, the trio settled on their final design.

Schutte, owner of Precision Custom Steel, took charge of designing, fabricating, and powder-coating the benches. Josh Campbell of Campbell Wood Designs pitched in with materials and assembly, while Zac Wilkins of Beatz DJ Service funded the project, helping cover costs for steel, hardware, and wood.

Beautiful and durable. These Buddy Benches aren't going anywhere!

“As a father of three boys, with one at Cornerstone and two more on the way, this project means the world to me,” Schutte shared. “If these benches can make a positive difference in even one kid’s life, I’d consider that a success.”

The Buddy Benches serve a special purpose: they’re a safe spot for kids feeling lonely or needing a friend. Other students are encouraged to invite those sitting on the bench to join in activities, fostering new friendships and promoting kindness. This initiative aligns perfectly with the district’s “Purposeful People” program, which aims to develop students’ social, emotional, and behavioral skills.

Looks like someone found a buddy!

Deputy Superintendent Mark Bullimore highlighted the benches’ importance in creating a positive school environment. “These benches symbolize unity and kindness, reminding us that no one sits alone in our schools,” he said in an email to the Citizen.

Thanks to the dedication of Wilkins, Campbell, and Schutte, Excelsior Springs students now have a tangible reminder of kindness and inclusion – a simple seat with the power to make a big difference.
