Excelsior Springs now has a fun and challenging new activity perfect for families and groups of friends to try. Inside Out Escape Entertainment officially opened its doors this month and has had a steady stream of business. Inside Out offers escape room adventures and other immersive in-person puzzle games. Escape rooms are a game in which participants are confined to a room or rooms and given a certain amount of time to follow clues, riddles, and puzzles in order to escape the space. Owners Je-anne and Tim Rueckert have been slowly growing their business while searching for a storefront to house their operation. The Rueckerts had developed a couple of portable games, a “time bomb” and a “magic” themed puzzle box both of which require players to solve riddles and clues before time runs out, that they had taken to festivals and other events to build awareness and gain a following.

Inside Out currently has one escape room, a Jungle Room based loosely on the movie Jumanji. Players are given one hour to follow clues to help rescue a lost boy, presumed to be stuck inside a mysterious board game, and to escape “the attic.” Escape rooms gained mass appeal in the United States around 2014 and evolved from computer “point and click adventures” such as Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and Mist. As more and more people have sought out experiential entertainment such as concerts, conventions, and even board games, escape rooms have continued to grow in popularity. According to the website, TheEscapeGame.com “Escape rooms fit seamlessly into this entertainment genre because they are immersive experiences. Instead of watching characters depict a story on screen, players ARE the main characters! Players get to be the hero of their own adventures as they live out plots and adventures previously only seen on screen. They can break out of prison, take part in daring art heists, find hidden treasure, and much more!”

The Rueckerts have plans to add three more escape room adventures to their business this summer and will occasionally revamp existing rooms with new clues and puzzles. They also said that as rooms wane in popularity they will be phased out and replaced with new themed rooms with all new puzzles and challenges. Je-anne and Tim who both grew up in Excelsior Springs said they were excited to bring wholesome family entertainment to their hometown. Tim said the Jungle Room is best suited for teams of 3 to 8 players as some puzzles take coordination between two or more players.
