How Excelsior Citizens Stayed Warm at Arrowhead

The Chiefs turned up the heat Saturday at Arrowhead, taking a 26-7 victory over the Miami Dolphins. But almost more interesting than the game itself was the -4 degree weather than many fans chose to sit out in. Tickets to the game were some of the cheapest they have been in the last few years, starting out at $29, making this a no-brainer deal.

“It may be -5 degrees but when playoff tickets are $29, you don’t say no,” local teen Cade Leonhard said on social media. “And even after the game and barely being able to feel my fingers, I don’t regret a thing.”

Citizens who went also enjoyed more than the game itself, with tailgating still going strong. Marianne D’amato let us know how these tailgating tents stayed warm, saying she was in a tent with three heaters all around just to stay warm. The cold even seemed to bring people together with D’amato’s hanging out with “friends from Texas, Las Vegas and even a lone Miami fan.”

But what about fans who were hanging out in the stands? How did they keep warm? Cole Dickey shared some insight on all the layers he wore just to stay warm. Dickey wore two pairs of tights, two pairs of sweats, three pairs of socks, four long sleeve shirts, one sweatshirt, one full zip up, one hoodie, overalls, Carhartt vest, big boots, three gloves, earmuffs, a beanie, and ski goggles.

The fourth coldest game in the NFL was no match for Excelsior fans, with over 90 comments claiming they knew people or went themselves with a group. While most of us decided the best course of action was to hang out at home, cuddled up under blankets and enjoying the warmth of our heaters, those who went didn’t seem to regret it.

“Even with below zero temperatures, Arrowhead was an amazing experience. Chiefs Kingdom brought the energy and we came away with another playoff victory, too,” JD Koedatich describes in words better than any of us could have.
