The Good Samaritan Center has brought the spirit of giving to life this holiday season, organizing Christmas celebrations for 35 local families and nearly 200 children. This year’s effort was spearheaded by Caseworker Kriston Mosley, who stepped into the role of Christmas organizer following the retirement of longtime Senior Caseworker Jen Chappel.
Mosley took on the challenge armed with a binder of scattered notes from previous years and a vision to simplify the process while bringing a traditional touch back to holiday giving. Working closely with local churches—including First United Methodist, Zion, and Barbee Church—she coordinated a campaign of donations and prayers to ensure a joyful Christmas for those in need.

The community’s generosity poured in, with contributions of toys, family gift bags, and activities to foster connection. Hallmark toys, previously stored at the Center, were rediscovered and added to the mix. Steve Bean and his family even purchased gifts and were invited to personally hand them out to the children, creating an unforgettable moment for everyone involved.
Each family received gift bags valued at $75 to $80, packed with carefully chosen items. A separate “family bag” was also provided, containing board games and other activities designed to bring loved ones together during the holidays.

The Center transformed its basement into a festive wonderland, complete with multiple stations for families to explore. At one station, parents could select gift bags and inspect their contents, while a gift-wrapping station offered paper, bows, tape, and bags for wrapping presents on-site. Another station provided stockings and fun items for stuffing.
The highlight of the day was a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Gene Swope, portraying Santa, arrived with Mrs. Claus (Wanda Lee Davenport) in a historic car escorted through downtown by police, coordinated by Lieutenant Ryan Dowdy. Families were delighted to take photos with the festive pair, capturing memories to cherish.

Despite the scope of the event, the Good Samaritan Center spent only $94, using the funds to provide cupcakes, drinks, and festive snacks. Every other item—from toys to decorations—was donated by the community.
The Center’s efforts, fueled by community kindness and Mosley’s leadership, provided a sense of relief and joy to families in need. This year’s event not only embodied the spirit of giving but also underscored the power of coming together to make a difference.
