The family of 37-year-old Daniel Wainscott, who lost his life after being struck by a train near his residence in Excelsior Springs on May 21, 2023 are struggling to make sense of the tragic accident. Described as “super funny” and “a guy who loved everyone,” Daniel’s vibrant personality and storytelling abilities left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Born and raised in Lawson, Missouri, Daniel attended Lawson High School, where participated in wrestling and even lettered in the sport. Although he didn’t play baseball for the school, he showcased his talent during summer baseball games and enjoyed the camaraderie of the game. Daniel’s love for sports extended to the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, whom he was able to see clinch another Super Bowl win earlier this year.
According to his mother Lisa Fitzthum, Daniel lived in Excelsior Springs near Walmart with his girlfriend, Sarah Roberts. She said they shared a loving relationship and had been together for several years. Daniel was also the father of 10-year-old Parker Ray Wainscott. Family was a significant part of Daniel’s life, and he had several siblings and step-siblings. Three sisters, Brittany and Bethany Wainscott, and Alyssa Gardner; and two brothers Gavin Roberts and Dylan Wainscott.
Lisa said Daniel had been struggling recently with mental health issues but she was certain Daniel’s death was not a suicide. While the exact circumstances surrounding Daniel’s passing are still unknown, Lisa and her family are questioning the timeline of the emergency response and whether that could have prevented Daniel’s death.
An engraved cross and flowers were placed near the tracks where Daniel lost his life (submitted photo).
Daniel’s loved ones have already gathered to remember and honor Daniel’s life at Hidden Valley Funeral Home in Lawson. A memorial cross was erected at the site of the accident by Daniel’s stepfather to serve as a testament to his vibrant personality and loving nature.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community extends its heartfelt condolences to Lisa Fitzthum, Sarah Roberts, their families, and all those who cherished Daniel.
