Excelsior Streets Get a Facelift for Summer 2021

If you’ve been along Jesse James Road or down along Dunbar Ave. you’ve certainly noticed the improvements that are being made. According to Director of Public Works, Chad Birdsong, these street upgrades are part of the normal upkeep scheduled through Excelsior Springs Public Works and funded in part from the city’s Transportation Trust Fund, Capital Improvements, Clay County Highway Department, as well as grant funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) and the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program.

Information from the Clay County Highway Department website states, “The decision to resurface a road is based on the amount of traffic on the road, the time since the road was last resurfaced, and the condition of the road.” The regularly scheduled rotation of maintenance for our roads and streets here in Excelsior Springs is all part of the plan to keep our city functioning smoothly. But, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the maintenance for 2020 was postponed and then combined with the work scheduled for 2021 which is why there is such extensive work happening this summer.

The street work happening this summer includes a two-inch mill and overlay on Jesse James Rd., Dunbar, and the intersection of Miller and Concourse. These areas will also be receiving some curb improvements as well as sidewalk replacements and ramps where needed. Jesse James Rd. will also be widened from 69 Hwy down to 10 Hwy and will include bike lanes on both sides of the road, replacing the current gravel shoulders. Additionally the intersection at Meadowlark Ln. and Jesse James Rd. will be reworked to make it more of a true, four-way stop (see photo).

According to Birdsong, crews will be working through the summer with expected completion dates sometime in August.
