

UPDATE 12/1622 4:00 PM – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office announced that Kyle P. Barrett, 39, of Lawson, Mo., has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury. He is being held in the Clay County detention center on a $50,000 bond

UPDATE 12/15/2022 at 7:03 PM: The Clay County Sheriff’s Department releases partial images of the suspect Chevy S-10 taken from inside the bus. It appears it may be missing a tailgate.
The Excelsior Springs School District 40 announced in an email and a Facebook Post on Thursday evening that an Excelsior Springs elementary student was involved in an accident during the bus route home.
Following the announcement from the district was an update from the Clay County Sheriff’s Department stating that deputies were dispatched at 4:21 pm today to the 24600 block of W. 92 Highway, near Cameron Road. A 7-year-old boy was getting off the bus when the driver of a late 1990s, early 2000s, black Chevy S-10 pick-up truck struck him and fled the scene.
The boy, a student of the Excelsior Springs School District, has been transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The boy was alert at the scene.
The Chevy S-10 fled the scene north on 69 Highway from 92 Highway. Witnesses reported it had either the rear bumper or undercarriage hanging down. If you see this vehicle, please call the Sheriff’s Office at 816-407-3700.
Deputies also are asking for help from any homeowners in the area of 92 Highway near Cameron Road who have doorbell or other security cameras that might have captured the incident or the suspect vehicle. Please call 816-407-3700 and ask to speak with Investigations.
