Excelsior Springs SAFE is set to host the Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14, a seven-week session designed to help parents and children build stronger family bonds through effective communication and relationship-building strategies. The sessions will be held at the Excelsior Springs Community Center in the Party Rooms every Wednesday from February 26 to April 16, with no class on March 26. The program runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
This initiative utilizes the evidence-based Strengthening Families 10-14 curriculum, which has been successfully implemented across all 50 states and in over 25 countries. The program is tailored for parents/caregivers and their children aged 10-14, though slightly older or younger children are also welcome to participate. Three certified trainers will lead the sessions, ensuring families receive expert guidance in enhancing their relationships.
Each weekly session begins with a catered family dinner from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m., followed by separate parent and youth sessions from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The evening concludes with a combined family session from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. To support families with younger children, childcare services will be provided at the Community Center. Best of all, the program, including meals and childcare, is completely free of charge.
The Strengthening Families Program is built on research demonstrating that protective parenting significantly enhances family relationships, reduces conflicts, and helps youth resist peer pressure leading to risky behaviors. Studies from the Partnerships in Prevention Science Institute indicate that every dollar spent on implementing this program yields a $9.60 return. The benefits extend beyond families, contributing to improved learning environments in schools, increased workplace focus for employees, reduced substance abuse treatment needs, and less involvement with law enforcement.
Families are encouraged to attend all seven sessions to maximize the program’s effectiveness, though organizers understand that occasional conflicts may arise. Those interested in learning more about the curriculum can visit Iowa State University’s Strengthening Families Program website. Excelsior Springs SAFE looks forward to welcoming families to this invaluable opportunity, fostering stronger connections and positive growth for parents and children alike.
