July 4, 2023 – Yesterday afternoon, an officer-involved crash occurred at the intersection of Crown Hill Road and W Jesse James Road, involving a civilian vehicle and an Excelsior Springs police officer. The collision, which transpired at approximately 1:50 PM, resulted in extensive damage to both vehicles. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the circumstances that led to the collision.

Because the incident involved a member of ESPD,the investigation was conducted by the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Both vehicles were totaled in the accident.

The vehicles involved in the crash were identified as a 2021 Dodge Charger and a 2009 Honda Accord. The Dodge Charger, driven by ESPD Lieutenant Jeremiah Renne, a 42-year-old male from Excelsior Springs was traveling eastbound at the time of the collision. The Honda Accord, operated by Madeline Redkins, a 26-year-old female from Parkville, Missouri, was heading southbound. The crash report filed indicated that the collision occurred when Redkins failed to yield and struck Renne’s vehicle in the intersection.

Although both drivers were wearing safety devices, Renne suffered moderate injuries in the crash. He was attended to by emergency medical services and transported to Excelsior Springs Hospital for further medical treatment. Details about Redkins’ condition were not provided in the report, but an emergency worker on the scene said there did not appear to be any serious injuries.

The control box for the traffic signals was smashed as a result of the collision.

The force of the impact caused Renne’s cruiser to collide with the control box for the traffic signal at the intersection completely disabling the lights. Initially, it was reported that there would need to be an officer on the scene to continue directing traffic but, for unknown reasons, that was not the case. Several citizens posted that they were in near-misses at the intersection later that afternoon. MODOT was on the scene later that evening and making repairs to the signal box.
