Excelsior Springs, MO – The Excelsior Springs Job Corps hosted a special Work-Based Learning Gratitude Luncheon on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, celebrating the partnerships that help students gain valuable real-world experience. Guests, including community business leaders, were treated to a Thanksgiving luncheon prepared and served by the Job Corps’ Culinary Arts students.
One highlight of the event was the recognition of Opportunity Cafe and Coffee, a longtime partner of the Job Corps Work-Based Learning program. Since opening in 2017, Opportunity Cafe has hosted over 20 groups of Job Corps students, providing them with hands-on training in a bustling real-world environment.
Valerie Hoffecker, manager of Opportunity Cafe, reflected on the meaningful partnership in a heartfelt Facebook post:
“We absolutely love partnering with the Job Corps… We get to know and love these students. They leave a mark that we will never forget! Yesterday they honored our cafe manager with such great words! Thank you to Annette, the whole kitchen staff, and our communities for supporting these students!”
At the luncheon, Annette Myers, Opportunity Cafe’s manager, was celebrated for her dedication to mentoring students, particularly those with special needs. Tia Douglas, Work-Based Learning Coordinator at the Job Corps, shared her gratitude for Myers’ patience and commitment:
“When I say she is a Godsend, she really is. She takes her time with the students and really works them through… Somebody that is patient who can work with a student who has special needs but wants to come in and learn and grow.”
The Job Corps’ Work-Based Learning program enables students to apply the skills they learn on campus in professional environments, preparing them for future careers. Partnerships with local businesses like Opportunity Cafe help students build confidence, gain practical experience, and earn money along the way.
