EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. (Oct. 5, 2024)— Excelsior Springs Fraternal Order of Eagles has made a generous $10,000 donation to the Greater Kansas City Friends of Fisher House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting military families staying at Fisher House locations while their loved ones receive medical treatment.
Mark Davis, president and board chairman of the Greater Kansas City Friends of Fisher House, accepted the donation during a fundraising dinner at the Eagles Club, where attendees enjoyed pulled pork sandwiches and smoked turkey legs. Christy Dimes, representing the Eagles Club, presented the check to Davis in front of a crowd of members.
“You have to sell a lot of pulled pork sandwiches to raise $10,000,” Dimes joked, highlighting the community effort behind the contribution.
Davis explained that the Friends of Fisher House organization plays a crucial role in providing services beyond what the Fisher House Foundation can cover, helping families stay focused on their loved one’s recovery.
“The Fisher Foundation builds the homes and gets them established, and then we step in to help keep things running smoothly,” Davis said. The organization’s contributions have included upgrading security, providing food and drinks, and covering the cost of local hotel rooms when the Fisher House is at full capacity. Last year, the Greater Kansas City Friends of Fisher House spent $82,000 on these services, far exceeding their usual $40,000 to $45,000 annual budget.
Fisher Houses, which are located at military and VA medical centers worldwide, provide free lodging for military and veteran families. These homes have up to 21 suites, each with private bedrooms and bathrooms, and offer shared kitchens, dining rooms, and living spaces.
Davis noted that the organization is preparing to celebrate the opening of the 100th Fisher House. “The only thing we want families to worry about is getting better,” he said.The Excelsior Springs Eagles Club, known for giving back to the community, supports various local causes every month.
