Hardison Reigns Supreme in “King of the Hill” Golf Event at Excelsior Springs

August 20, 2023 – The greens of the Excelsior Springs Golf Course bore witness to an exceptional display of golfing prowess as Austin Hardison, Assistant Golf Professional, clinched victory in both the stroke play and the thrilling horse race event. The event, initially slated for 9 holes, evolved into a captivating 12-hole showdown between Hardison and Michael Birkeness, culminating in an intense competition that had spectators at the edge of their carts.

As the match progressed the competition saw Hardison and Birkeness, the final two competitors, matching strokes on holes 9, 10, and 11, captivating an audience of over 45 enthusiastic spectators. This was only the second time Birkeness has participated in the “King of the Hill” event but he played quite well making tough shots all afternoon.

In the end, Hardison’s skill and determination shone through, ultimately securing his triumph and leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed the gripping duel. In addition to his victory, Hardison earned accolades in the skins game, notably conquering hole #2 with exceptional shots.

Competitors for the day included Jaron McClaran, Chris Delano, Canton Woods, Tyler Berry, Michael Birkeness, Bill Griffey III, Jeff Zimmerman, Jeff Vineyard, Marty Albertson, and course pros Austin Hardison and Tim Jarman.

In addition to bragging rights, the top three finishers in the horse race event earned gift cards to Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop.

Excelsior Springs Club Championship Crowns Top Performers

The golfing fervor continued Sunday with the Excelsior Springs Club Championship, a two-round challenge that put participants’ skills and composure to the test. Jeff Zimmerman emerged as the victorious champion, exhibiting his prowess by posting an impressive 76-71 for a total of 147 (3 over par).

Bill Griffey III secured the second-place honor, showcasing his mettle with scores of 77-76 that aggregated to 153, a commendable feat. Jeff Vineyard secured third place, delivering scores of 82-72 for a total of 154.

In the women’s category, Terri Irons exemplified golfing finesse as she clinched the coveted title of Ladies Club Champion. Irons’ scores of 82-85 tallied to a total of 167, a testament to her skill and unwavering commitment.

The Excelsior Springs Golf Course is a gem of a course that continues to be a platform for exceptional golfing talent and spirited competition. Participants departed this weekend’s festivities with memories of remarkable rounds that embodied the essence of the sport – camaraderie, determination, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
