Railroad Track Repairs will Close Dunbar Ave at “Miller’s Crossing” in Excelsior Springs August 5-9
Excelsior Springs, MO – Residents and commuters are advised that significant repairs and replacements of the railroad tracks at Miller’s Crossing, located at 1073 Dunbar Avenue, will commence early Monday morning, August 5, 2024. According to Public Works Director Chad Birdsong, railroad crews from Canadian Pacifice Kansas City (CPKC) will lead the project, targeting the heavily trafficked crossing.
The track repairs are needed due to the natural settling of railway tracks over time. According to railway publications, railway tracks settle due to permanent deformation in the ballast and underlying soil. While new tracks are straight and well-leveled, they lose their perfect geometry after extended use because of train traffic. The severity of this settlement largely depends on the amount of train traffic, quality and behavior of the ballast, sub-ballast, and subgrade.
Birdsong noted that the railway crew repairs are expected to be completed by Thursday, August 8, 2024. Following the track repairs, Excelsior Springs city crews will replace the pavement on either side of the crossing. If all goes according to plan, the road is anticipated to reopen by Friday afternoon, August 9, 2024.
During the construction period, residents and commuters are advised to seek alternate routes. The closest detour is at the underpass along Titus Avenue. Other convenient detours include using 10 Highway/Kearney Road or crossing at Italian Way.
