Excelsior Springs, Mo. (April 6, 20205) — Excelsior Springs Hospital (ESH) welcomes Interventional Pain Specialist Dr. Dennison Hamilton to assist patients suffering from head, neck, and back pain.
With over 40 years of experience, Dr. Hamilton shared that his medical journey began with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Park College in Parkville, Missouri, followed by his studies at Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City. In 1981, he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and later completed a master’s degree in public health at St. Louis University.
With deep personal and professional roots in the Kansas City region, Dr. Hamilton is now giving back to rural communities. “There is a need for interventional pain management at ESH,” he said. “Back pain and neck pain are very prominent conditions.”
Dr. Hamilton explained that interventional pain management offers patients customized treatments—including medications, injections, and spinal implants—to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots in the neck and back.
He noted that most of the pain he treats is arthritic in nature, although some patients suffer acute disc herniation in the neck or back, which can lead to radiating pain in the arms, legs, and lower back. His focus is on the source of the pain. “Most people develop some form of arthritis in their spine that encloses on the spinal cord and the nerve roots, causing neurologic loss, pain, numbness, and tingling,” he said. “Everything involving the spinal cord also involves the nerve roots and the nerves that come out of the spinal area.”
In addition to treating head, neck, and back discomfort, ESH and Dr. Hamilton also assist patients dealing with a wide range of pain-related conditions, including:
- Arthritis
- Cancer-related discomfort
- Chronic headaches and migraines
- Disc bulges, protrusions, and extrusions
- Foot, ankle, and hip pain
- Joint and muscle discomfort
- Knee and injury-related pain
- Sciatica
- Shingles-related pain
- Stroke-related pain
- Work-related injuries
Dr. Hamilton is available to see patients two to three days a week and can visit with up to 33 patients per day. He offers an individualized approach, enhanced by advanced imaging tools. While patients are typically referred by their primary care physicians, Dr. Hamilton noted, “They don’t have to have one” to schedule an appointment.
In addition to his work at ESH, Dr. Hamilton also provides care at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Ray County Memorial Hospital, and St. Joseph Medical Center.
Even with his busy schedule, Dr. Hamilton said he enjoys spending time at ESH and serving the local community. “I try to treat people who live in the community so they don’t have to go outside of Excelsior Springs to seek medical care,” he said. “Although ESH is a smaller community hospital, the quality of the administration, nurses, and health care is very high.”
