EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. (Oct. 3, 2024)—The long-neglected Siloam Spring Park in downtown Excelsior Springs was officially rededicated on Thursday afternoon, breathing new life into a community space that had been dormant for years. Located at the corner of Temple Avenue and Perry Lane, the park’s revival was a collaborative effort between the parks department, the school district, and the McElwee family.
The park, once part of the Calvary Christian Union Church, was donated to the city after Earl and Margaret McElwee, who owned the property, passed away. The McElwee family’s donation provided a space for the community to gather, play, and reflect on a family legacy rooted in generosity and faith. The park now features playground equipment repurposed from the former Lewis Elementary School, moved by a parks crew led by Chad Clevenger before the school’s demolition last year. The refurbished playground equipment from Lewis includes a “Buddy Bench” and various play structures such as slides and jungle gym equipment.
Jake Simmons, grandson of the McElwees, delivered a heartfelt speech during the dedication ceremony, reflecting on the family’s vision for the park.
“My grandparents had one thing that was symbolic to them, and that was a lighthouse — a beacon for others facing troubled times,” Simmons said. “This park represents their commitment to the community and will serve as a place for children and families to enjoy for years to come.”
Simmons expressed gratitude to the Parks and Recreation department, the school district, and all those who worked to restore the park. He reminisced on growing up attending church with his grandparents, contributing to the renovation of the old church, and now seeing the space transform into a community asset.
“This is something that will carry our family’s legacy forward,” Simmons said. “We are truly blessed to be part of a community that values spaces like this.”
The dedication concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially opening the park to the public.
