Clay County Fights Cybercrime with Free E-Waste Recycling Event

Liberty, MO—To combat cybercrime and protect residents from identity theft, the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office is hosting a free electronics recycling event at 201 Mill St. in Liberty, MO, on Saturday, June 15th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

“This program is about being proactive,” said Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson. “By securely disposing of old electronics, residents can prevent criminals from accessing personal information and committing crimes like identity theft.”

The event, held in partnership with PCs for People, a nonprofit and national leader in IT asset disposition, will allow residents to drop off unwanted electronics for responsible recycling or refurbishment. “The event is a great way to declutter your homes, protect yourselves from cybercrime, and help the environment all at once,” said Thompson. PCs for People recycles electronics in an eco-friendly way, keeping hazardous materials out of landfills.

“Many people hold onto old devices that contain sensitive data like credit card numbers and passwords,” Thompson continued. “PCs for People securely erases all data before refurbishing devices for low-income families or responsibly recycling them.”

Accepted items include a wide range of electronics, from TVs and computers to laptops, smartphones, and cables. There is a small fee of $0.55 per pound for tube and older flat-screen TVs.

“When I came to Clay County and the Prosecutor’s Office was thinking about identity theft and how to prevent people from becoming victims, PCs for People popped into my head,” said Cher Congour, Community Engagement Specialist for the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office. “I knew about their work from my time in Kansas City, and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to partner with them to offer this service to our residents.”

The Clay County Prosecutor’s Office hopes this event is a success and plans to hold similar events in the future, potentially expanding them to reach more communities throughout the county.
