June 25, 2023 – A group of passionate citizens, led by local resident Sam Brown and the Excelsior Springs Quarterback Club, is spearheading an effort to rename a section of 69 Highway that runs through Excelsior Springs in honor of the renowned coach Vic Bonuchi. The Quarterback Club has teamed up with Missouri State Representative Doug Richey to introduce legislation that would officially designate the stretch of highway from Crown Hill Road to Tracy Avenue as the “Coach Vic Bonuchi Highway.”

Coach Vic Bonuchi, a legendary figure in Excelsior Springs, is widely recognized for his exceptional coaching career in football, wrestling, and baseball at Excelsior Springs High School. His outstanding contributions to the community and his impressive coaching record have garnered him immense respect and admiration, including induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Born from a vision to pay tribute to Coach Bonuchi’s remarkable legacy, the proposal to rename the highway has garnered more than 100 signatures. The plan stipulates that the Missouri Department of Transportation will be responsible for erecting and maintaining appropriate signs along the designated highway. The cost of $4,000 for the signage will be covered by private donations.

To facilitate the fundraising efforts, the Excelsior Springs Quarterback Club has set up a donation drive. Interested individuals are encouraged to send their contributions to the club’s attention at the following address:

Excelsior Springs, MO 64024.

Any funds received exceeding the required $4,000 will be directed toward establishing an ESHS scholarship in honor of Coach Bonuchi. Anyone who would like more information on the project should reach out to Sam Brown.
