“Growing up in Excelsior Springs, Kim Mawby loved school, and at a very young age, she developed an interest in healthcare. This interest continued into high school where she obtained her CNA certification and began her career as a Hospice Nurse. It was during her job as a Hospice Nurse, amid the Covid pandemic, that she discovered a passion for spiritualism, particularly in the arts of Reiki and energy healing.
Reiki is a Japanese practice of sound healing that involves using crystal bowls to target different chakras within the body. Throughout the pandemic, Kim found herself under immense stress, especially working in the healthcare industry. Turning to sound healing sparked a newfound interest for her.
“It allowed me to relax and see things from a different perspective,” Kim says, describing her initial experience with Reiki. “I became hooked and, as a nurse, wanted to explore things that could help people feel better through non-traditional medicine, a more holistic approach.” This inspiration led her to pursue Reiki certification by enrolling in a year-long schooling program, dedicating two hundred hours to mastering the practice. Eventually, she became certified in both Reiki and yoga. While she currently works part-time at Serenity on the Square for her practice, she has also been actively bringing her skills to Excelsior.
On July 1st, Mawby was invited to the newly opened winery, Shamrock Hills, to showcase her Crystal Sound Bowls, which she uses during Reiki sessions. The kick-off event for her sound healing was a great success. “We were outside, surrounded by the water and birds, and the whole experience was simply amazing,” she shares. At the event, she allowed 12 guests to lie down, relax, and close their eyes while she used different bowls to help relieve their stress. This type of experience is what Kim Mawby hopes to bring to Excelsior Springs, with her main goal being to introduce people to the benefits of Reiki and how it can help them relax.
However, Reiki is not Kim’s only skill; most recently, she conducted Angel Card Readings at Molly Roberts Studio. At the studio, she encourages intuition to guide individuals in selecting cards that provide insight into themselves and offer glimpses of their fortune. Card readings are just another tool in Kim’s toolbox, alongside Reiki, but it doesn’t end with spiritual tools. Kim is currently employed as a school nurse at North Kansas City School District, where she deals with various issues that children face. Although she can’t use Reiki at the school, her energy work allows her to tune in and better understand the students’ needs and offer them extra care when necessary.
With Nursing, Reiki, and Card readings, and being a school nurse, Kim’s toolbox is well-equipped. However, there’s a common thread connecting all these skills – her passion for making people smile. “I love seeing people smile,” she says with enthusiasm. Through Reiki, she witnesses people making connections and recalling fond memories from the past, leading them to relax and become more in tune with their inner selves. Her ultimate goal is to bring her holistic skills to Excelsior Springs and build her Reiki and energy business to a point where she can do it full-time.
Kim continues to reside in Excelsior Springs and is delighted to be able to offer her energy healing services in the local area. She works with wedding showers, small groups of friends seeking a getaway, and privately booked groups.
