Capstone Quest: Building Essential Skills for High School Students

Speaker at William Jewell College in 2018

The DeBruce Foundation, in collaboration with Jewell Unlimited, LLC and the Missouri Humanities, is set to launch Capstone Quest, an innovative weeklong educational program aimed at equipping high school students with essential skills for the workforce. This exciting initiative comes as a response to a 2021 study conducted by the DeBruce Foundation, which revealed significant gaps in the preparedness of young professionals in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The study, which surveyed over 400 young professionals who had been in the workforce for one to five years, shed light on six crucial areas where these individuals lacked the necessary skills for the workplace. Dubbed “Essential Skills,” these areas include Communication, Collaboration, Proactivity, Executive Function, Critical Thinking, and Interpersonal Skills. The findings of the study have been consistently corroborated by employers and educators, further emphasizing the urgent need to address these gaps.

Capstone Quest seeks to bridge this skills gap by providing high school students with an immersive learning experience. Participants will delve into the study of Downtown Liberty and William Jewell College, where they will have the opportunity to understand, acquire, and develop the Essential Skills. The overarching goal of the program is for students to create a scavenger hunt that showcases the presence and significance of the humanities in these two locations. The project will focus on highlighting areas featuring art, history, architecture, music, culture, and other humanities-oriented experiences. Once completed, the scavenger hunt will be made available to the public.

Jewell Unlimited, LLC, in partnership with the Missouri Humanities and with support from the Missouri Humanities Trust Fund, is responsible for the creation and delivery of Capstone Quest. The camp offers a comprehensive package that includes all student materials, daily lunch, and a paper and digital copy of the Certificate of Completion.

Students are required to attend the entire week of Capstone Quest, as each day builds upon the experiences of the previous day. The program will take place at both Downtown Liberty and the William Jewell College campus, necessitating comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Drop-off and pick-up will be at 17 S Jewell St, Liberty, MO 64068, with drop-off scheduled for 8:00 am and pick-up at 5:00 pm.

Jewell Unlimited, LLC, the agency responsible for Capstone Quest, is a Missouri-based learning agency founded by a group of dedicated educators, content designers, and leaders in critical thinking. The organization aims to revolutionize corporate growth training and personal development courses by providing engaging and relevant learning journeys. Capstone Quest represents an exciting opportunity for high school students to develop the Essential Skills necessary for success in the modern workforce. By immersing themselves in the rich humanities of Downtown Liberty and William Jewell College, participants will gain valuable knowledge and experience while creating an engaging scavenger hunt for the public to enjoy. With Jewell Unlimited’s commitment to innovative and relevant learning, Capstone Quest is set to empower the next generation of professionals with the skills they need to thrive in the ever-evolving world of work.

Registration for Capstone Quest is now open, and interested students are encouraged to visit the official Jewell Unlimited event website for more information and to secure their place in this transformative educational experience.
